2.2. Job Definition

A Job is any program you want run. This can be an executable program (.exe or .com file) or a command script file (such as a .bat DOS batch file) or any other command you can normally issue to the operating system. To use a Job in a Batch (more on batches later), you must first define the Job to the Batch Scheduler, so it knows what program you want to run. Please note, when scheduling a job, the program you want to run must exist or be accessible from each agent computer you expect the job to run on.

Shown below is the Job Definition screen.

Use this screen to add, edit or remove Job definitions in the batch scheduler database. You must define a Job before it can be used in a batch definition job step.

Each 'hardhat' icon shown represents one job definition record in the batch scheduler database. There is no limit to the number of jobs you can create/define in the batch scheduler system. Define a job for each program you want to run with the scheduler. Use a Batch (refer to Batch Definition section of this document) to define when (the batch schedule) to run a job or series of jobs (the batch), and in what order to run them(job step sequence).

A job definition record contains information such as: Command to run, failure restart processing, alert information (to be alerted when things go wrong or good), dependencies, resource requirements and documentation references. All of this job information is maintained using the Job Detail screen, described in the following section of this document.
